Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a medical science originating 5,000 years ago from China based upon the universal law of the Tao: to achieve balance through the unobstructed flow of energy of the pathways as defined in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This balance is obtained by inserting fine, flexible, disposable, sterile needles into the body to access the body's vital energy called Qi. This universal vital force in all living things becomes drained and blocked through the emotional, spiritual, and physical rigors of everyday life, but can be rejuvenated and unblocked by acupuncture. When a patient receives acupuncture, the nervous system reacts to the needles by sending electromagnetic signals to the spinal cord and brain, which causes the release of certain neurochemicals into the bloodstream. The endorphins, histamines, neuropeptides, and hormones which are released assist in relieving stress, inflammation, pain, and improving circulation, thereby resulting in a general sense of well-being and promotion of self-healing.

Acupuncture treats a wide variety of ailments including depression, digestive problems, emotional problems, fatigue, fibromyalgia, headache, insomnia, muskuloskeletal pain, migraines, nausea, pain, sinus problems, sleeping problems, stress, urinary problems, and whiplash.

Acupuncture can help to alleviate health problems when balance is restored and unblocked qi is able to flow freely again, restoring emotional and physical alignment. Though some patients may experience change after one treatment, other patients may take up to four to six treatments to see change, especially if the condition is chronic or complicated. Acupuncture generally doesn't hurt, but there may be new sensations such as tingling, heaviness, or a dull ache. The few possible side effects are mild bruising, dizziness, or light-headedness during a treatment, or fatigue after a treatment.

The body will heal at its own rate. After the initial session, an individualized treatment plan will be developed for each condition. It is important to remember that although two people may have the same condition, they may not progress in the same manner as each patient is an individual who must be studied, analyzed, and treated uniquely. Some patients respond after one treatment as others need four to six treatments to give the acupuncture and the body the opportunity to work together. It is important that the patient get into the habit of keeping to weekly appointments as this will facilitate the healing, thereby creating the most successful results.

Before your treatment, it is important to have eaten an hour or two before you arrive and to have eaten normal meals during the day and it is also important to be well rested. You should wear loose, comfortable clothing. Acupuncture is not recommended for those who are fasting, exhausted, or have recently experienced an emotional upset.

The Healing Crisis
This phase of healing is a period of change in which a person cleanses, regenerates, and becomes more healthy. This period of change is often accompanied by the vigorous elimination of toxins which can signal the temporary resurgence of old symptoms as they finally become resolved. A healing crisis is triggered when a person moves in a healthy direction. Once the decision to become healthy is made and a person takes action, the mind and body are able to dispose of symptoms more readily. Because the cleaning is working overtime to drive out stagnant impurities, the patient may feel sick, e.g. fatigue, fever, sleeplessness, constipation, skin reactions, irritability. Several of these things may occur and they are good signs showing that the body is strong enough to work at cleansing itself. Once this process is allowed to follow its natural course, health is regained and a tremendous feeling of wholeness, strength, and vibrancy may be expected.
